The only difference between American and European Maine Coons is in their facial features.

European Coons have stronger, square-shaped muzzles, while the face of their American cousins is more natural and rounded.

European Maine Coons have larger ears with prominent tufts (similar to lynx), longer, bushier tails, and higher cheekbones. They also have a more majestic look, while American Maine Coons have softer, milder features that better resemble average house cats.

American Maine Coons have oblique-shaped eyes, while European cats have almond-shaped ones.

Besides their facial characteristics, most other traits are the same in both variants. 

European Maine Coons are significantly larger than other cat breeds.

 Maine Coons are known for their size, so naturally, one of the first questions people ask about this breed is, “How big can a Maine Coon get?”  

The Maine Coon is the largest non-hybrid cat breed, and it is also one of the largest breed of cats in the world. A male Maine Coon can weigh about 15 to 25 pounds, while a female can weigh between 10 and 15 pounds.

They have a sturdy frame and plenty of length, which they love draping over anything comfy that will hold them. They grow slowly and don’t reach full size until they are around five-years-old. 

Known as the “dogs of the cat world,” Maine Coons are generally good-natured and love people. These gentle giants can also be trained to play fetch and even love water! Extremely loyal, they love to be around their owners, though they can keep themselves occupied when needed.

Maine Coons also make great pets for families with children. Their playful nature makes them good fun for little ones and their size means that they aren't intimidated or afraid to be handled by children.

 The Maine Coon’s nutrition should be carefully controlled. This breed has a tendency to become soft or overweight if not carefully monitored.

The Maine Coon must have adequate exercise. Cat trees and perches should be available and she needs adequate running room. She loves interactive play and she will play with every family member. 

The Maine Coon's coat needs daily attention. She should be brushed to make certain that her fur does not tangle. Usually this grooming is easy to do if she is trained at a young age that this is fun.

Most Maine Coon lovers are used to seeing this cat's coat in a classic brown tabby. But the truth is that Maine Coons can come in a whole variety of colors. While they aren't bred to be lavender or chocolate, it's possible to find everything from solid to tortoiseshell to calico. Want to see another one of their lovely physical traits? Just look into their eyes. Maine Coons will also typically have green, gold, or copper-colored eyes.  

On average, Maine Coons are born with five toes on each of their fore paws and four on their hind paws, but some are found to have six toes on each paw. While it is not a common occurrence now, there was a period when 40% of the Maine Coon’s population had six toes on each leg. A Maine Coon with 6 toes is called a polydactyl Maine Coon. The extra toes are caused by extra appendages on their paw when they were born. 

 Although they are not the most intelligent cat breed, Maine Coons are known to be naturally curious and also possess an above-average intelligence level amongst cats. The advantage of this is that they are very easy to train; it is well known that cats are difficult animals to train.

A lot of other facts demonstrate the intelligence level of the Maine Coon, e.g., they are sociable, and this demands intelligence, which the Maine Coon is known for. They also show intelligence by being careful around their owner when they sense that their owner is busy.
